About the Class - Year 1 Drayton Parslow

In Year 1 the children work with Miss Oliver, supported by Mrs Venturi. Our day starts with Phonics which is delivered using the Letters and Sounds programme. Each Friday we have a spelling test using the grapheme (sound) learnt that week. We also enjoy learning to spell our keywords throughout Year 1.

Our curriculum is very varied in English. Some of the areas covered include, fairytales, learning how to use an information book and making our own non-fiction book and poetry. We often link our work to the topics we are covering and trips to places such as Waddesdon Manor, makes our English lessons even more exciting. Handwriting is very important to us and we practise our handwriting as much as possible. Every week we have 'challenge letters' and 'challenge numbers' to form correctly in our written work.

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Counting forwards and backwards in steps of 1, 2, 5 and 10 forms part of our daily Maths lesson, before moving on to learning our 2, 10 and 5 times tables. Other areas covered include 2D and 3D shape, data handling, measuring, capacity, fractions of shapes and numbers and adding and subtracting numbers.
