Bringing Stories to life for KS1
On Monday 20th October, KS1 had the privilege of meeting Mariesa Dulak and Rebecca Cobb, the author and illustrator of ‘There’s a Tiger on the Train’, at The Stables in Wavendon. Whilst Mariesa read the story to the children, they learnt some actions for each of the characters, which culminated in a fantastic dance routine at the end of the morning! The children also saw Rebecca do a live illustration of a new character!
In the afternoon we were lucky enough to have Mariesa deliver a workshop at Drayton Parslow. She read them another of her books - The Silver Shadow. She was keen to explain that it had been inspired by something that happened to her Dad when he was growing up in Barbados. The story and illustrations inspired a lot of discussion about the senses - what might be seen, heard, smelt etc at the seaside and what sea creatures might be found in a rock pool. The children then went onto drawing sea creatures and making their own little rock pools using crafting materials.
Rebecca led the workshop at Mursley, where the children had another opportunity to see her illustrate some characters they invented on the spot. She read them another one of her books, A Wild Walk to School’ (which was inspired by her own children) and the children all illustrated a fantastic way they’d like to travel to school!).
A truly enjoyable experience for all the children!
